FastCopy is a program that promises to give users unprecedented control over copying and transferring files. Users whose computers habitually tie up trying to transfer files may rejoice, while others will give it nothing more than a shrug. This freeware program has an incredibly basic display that is practically one step removed from binary code. With simple descriptions and options, users select a file they want to have copied as well as its destination. From there, a wealth of choices are bundled into the crowded screen. The speed of copy is adjustable you can include and exclude filters. There are options for ACL and Altstream also.

It is almost necessary to know what these choices are in order to get the full effect of the program. While FastCopy has a Help menu, it is laden with jargon that may not be instantly understandable for new users. Our test files copied to the chosen destination quickly and efficiently, ending with a description of the transfer, tallying MBs, time spent, file totals, and the rate at which files copied. While the program operated as promised, we didn't see a great need for it on most computers. Your average desktop system's hard disk data commit rate (circa 20110 was in the neighborhood of 40 MB/sec -- less than 50% capacity on a gigabit link. Also, the file open/close/handshake process on Windows is rather cumbersome and requires FastCopy to confirm opens and closes before continuing. If you are moving a ton of little files, you are burning more network bandwidth on the file management process than you are on the file contents.
