If it is computer generated or designed, it comes from some sort of 2d or 3d CAD program. These can be extremely pricey and difficult to learn if you have never had any cad experience. There are some free programs out there or student editions of cad systems. Just google 'Free CAD software' and sift through all the 'stuff' Look for shareware or freeware. Here's one I found right away. That one looks like something I may even look into more when I have some time. Take a look at Autodesk Inventor. It's sudo-cad. Does 3d modeling and rendering, but best of all you can test components for structural integrity by specifying what material each part is made of and subjecting them to stress tests. Outputs all your blueprints too. You can get a 30 day trial at the autodesk website. It's free and they ship it to your door.

I've been using maya for 10 years now and it's great for design work but inventor is better suited for building stuff. PC only however. Best of luck! Inventor will run you between $1,385 (LT) to $3,799 (suite) depending on the version and license.

I've only used the suite so I don't know if FEA is a feature of the LT version. For one off custom production it probably won't be worth the expense unless you're doing some crazy expensive build from scratch. If you're just looking to do more creative work like tank designs, etc., I'd take a look at blender. It's a free 3d modeling and rendering program and would be well suited for design work.

There are tons of tutorials online for blender, and the learning curve isn't as severe as it is for maya, 3ds, softimage, autocad, inventor etc. You can pick up a book at borders for blender and be productive in a week. Blender has come a long way since it was released. It used to be a whopping 3mb download and did nearly as much as Maya. I haven't used it in years. If you have a dedicated machine to run it on you might get away with running the 30 day trial and just reinstalling your OS after 30 days and installing Inventor again.

If that doesn't work, I'm pretty sure they tie the license to your ethernet card's serial number, so you might be able to just install a new ethernet card every 30 days and reinstall OS and Inventor to get it to work. Ethernet cards are like $10 bucks these days, so not that big of a monthly expense. They might even teach you the secret geek hand shake at Bestbuy for going through so many ethernet cards.
